Snow Leopard Revealed
There are some interesting new features in Snow Leopard that are not too well known. One of the most interesting ones I have found is that the icons that Apple provides for its applications are now drawn in a high resolution. When you open a Finder window, you can blow up the icons to a 512×512 size using the slider at the bottom right. When you do this with your Applications Folder you will see all your icons in great detail. Some third party apps have already provided a hi-res version, so those are nice, but others still have to update their icons…some work to do for Adobe, Microsoft and some other small app providers!
Some of the icons are really beautiful and some reveal stuff we never new before…who knew that Johnny Appleseed wrote something to Kate for the TextEdit app!!
These icons can be really useful in presentations and other artwork. To copy the icons there is a very simple trick in Leopard and this actually reveals another nice improvement in Snow Leopard. When you press Command+Shift+4 your mouse cursor will change and you can go to any point on the screen to create a partial screen capture in a separate png file. Just click and drag over what you want to capture.
Now before Snow Leopard this created a file on your desktop named ‘Picture 1.png’, where the number would increase. The annoying thing was that every time you cleaned up the desktop, it started numbering at 1 again, so you’d end up with many ‘Picture 1.png” files…In Snow Leopard the filename is now unique from the start. It will be ‘Screen shot 2009-09-05 at 6.15.58 PM.png’ – Thanks Apple!
